Sri Lanka Introduces Free Visit Visa for 40 Countries

Great news for international travelers planning an island getaway! In an exciting move to boost tourism, the Sri Lankan government has officially launched a free visit visa scheme for citizens of 40 countries. Effective from May 25, 2026, travelers from these selected nations can explore the beautiful beaches, lush tea plantations, and historic temples of Sri Lanka without paying the standard visa processing fee. Free Visa vs. Free of Formalities: What Does It Mean?

While the visa fee is completely waived, it is important to understand that free of charge does not mean free of formalities. All travelers from the 40 eligible nations are still strictly required to apply for and obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before arriving in Sri Lanka. The only difference? The price tag is now $0! VisasNews

The 40 Countries Eligible for the Free Sri Lanka Visa

The fee-waiver program covers major travel markets across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, North America, and Oceania. Here is the full, official list of the 40 countries eligible for the free 30-day tourist ETA:

  • Americas: Canada, United States of America
  • Europe: Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom
  • Asia & Oceania: Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Russia, South Korea, Thailand
  • Middle East: Bahrain, Iran, Israel, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Note: Nationals of the Maldives, Seychelles, and Singapore also continue to receive free visas under separate, long-standing bilateral reciprocal agreements (with Maldivian nationals receiving up to a 90-day stay).

Key Features of the Free Tourist ETA

If your country is on the list, your approved free ETA grants you:

  • A maximum stay of up to 30 days in Sri Lanka.
  • Double-entry facilities (you can leave and re-enter once within that 30-day window, though your total days on the island cannot exceed the initial 30 days).

How to Apply for Your Free Sri Lanka ETA

The application process remains entirely online and takes just a few minutes. Make sure to use only the official government portal to avoid third-party service fees:

What You Need to Apply:

  • A passport with at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry.
  • A digital passport-size photograph.
  • Confirmed return or onward travel flight tickets.
  • Details of your accommodation/hotel booking in Sri Lanka.

Important Notes on Extensions and Refunds

  • No Refunds for Past Payments: If you paid for your Sri Lankan tourist visa prior to the implementation date of May 25, 2026, the fee is non-refundable.
  • Staying Longer Than 30 Days? If you fall in love with the island and want to extend your stay beyond 30 days, you are permitted to do so. However, you must apply for a visa extension through the Department of Immigration and Emigration and pay the standard applicable extension fees.
